Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.
Bhaktapur, known locally as Khwopa and historically called Bhadgaon, is a city in the east corner of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal located about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) from the capital city, Kathmandu. Bhaktapur is the smallest municipality of Nepal by size as well as the most densely populated. Along with Kathmandu and Lalitpur, Bhaktapur is one of the three main cities of the Kathmandu Valley and is a major Newar settlement of the country. The city is also known for its Newar tradition, cuisine and artisans. Bhaktapur suffered heavy damage in the April 2015 earthquake.
Nestled in the Kathmandu Valley, Bhaktapur is a UNESCO World Heritage site that boasts of rich culture, stunning architecture and ancient history. The city dates back to the 12th century and is known for its well-preserved Newari architecture, temples, palaces and courtyards that showcase the traditional craftsmanship of the locals.
As you walk through the narrow streets of Bhaktapur, you will be transported to a bygone era where time stands still. The city is home to numerous temples, including the famous Nyatapola temple, which is the tallest temple in Nepal. The intricate wood carvings, stone sculptures and pagoda-style roofs of the temples are a sight to behold and will leave you mesmerized.
